Sen. Ted Kennedy to Write Memoir (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2007/11/26/entertainment/e200218S67.DTL&hw=immigration&sn=009&sc=275) By HILLEL ITALIE | AP National Writer, November 27, 2007

The memoirs of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the youngest and last surviving brother of the country's most famous political siblings and for decades an eminent liberal statesman and legislator, have been acquired by an imprint of the Hachette Book Group USA.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but a publishing official with knowledge of the negotiations said Monday that the agreement was comparable to the $8 million Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton received for "Living History" and the $9 million former British Prime Minister Tony Blair will reportedly get for his planned memoir. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity, following standard industry practice.

"I've been fortunate in my life to grow up in an extraordinary family and to have a front row seat at many key events in our nation's history," Kennedy, 75, said in a statement. "I hope my reflections can contribute to a deeper understanding of many events in the history of this great country and to a more in-depth picture of an American family."

Hachette's acquisition came after a six-day auction involving nine publishers. Kennedy was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose other clients include Clinton and Tony Blair.

The book, currently untitled and tentatively scheduled to come out in 2010, builds upon the oral history project that Kennedy has been working on through the Miller Center of the University of Virginia. The project, launched in 2004 and expected to last several years, will include interviews with the senator, family members, colleagues, journalists, foreign leaders and others.

For his memoir, Kennedy plans to use a co-author/researcher, still to be determined. A "significant" portion of the proceeds will be donated to charity, including the John F. Kennedy Library, where the senator's public and private papers will eventually be stored, according to Kennedy adviser Stephanie Cutter.

The book will be published by the Hachette imprint Twelve, founded two years ago by former Random House editor Jonathan Karp

"The senator's book is not about the money," Karp told The Associated Press. "I think it's about telling a story that only he can tell. He's both seen history and he's made history. His perspective is unique, and it would be a tremendous loss if he did not put his experiences in writing."

Karp said that he and other Hachette officials went down to Washington last fall to meet with the senator at his home, where they talked in Kennedy's study, family pictures on the walls, books by Robert Caro and David McCullough on the shelves.

"He intends to be candid," Karp said. "He's a great raconteur and he talked so articulately and disarmingly about his childhood and some of his political experiences over the years that you got the sense that this is a man capable of captivating anyone with a story."

Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat and the youngest of nine children, was first elected to the Senate in 1962, when he was voted in to fill the seat initially vacated by his older brother, John F. Kennedy, who had been elected president. Ted Kennedy was just 30 at the time, barely old enough to legally have the job, and his greatest burden was living down the taunt of his Democratic primary opponent, Edward J. McCormack: "If your name was simply Edward Moore instead of Edward Moore Kennedy, your candidacy would be a joke."

Kennedy's achievements and troubles exceeded everyone's expectations. Brothers John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, and personal scandal most notably a 1969 accident in which a car he drove ran off a bridge, killing passenger Mary Jo Kopechne helped prevent Ted Kennedy from becoming president himself.

But he also emerged as one of the Senate's most accomplished and eloquent legislators, respected even by Republicans for his knowledge and hard work, and for his role in passing bills on education, wages, health care, immigration and many other issues. Last year, he was easily elected to his eighth full term and has no plans to retire, according to Cutter.

Kennedy's previous books include "My Senator and Me," a children's story, and "America Back on Track." He has been the subject of countless works and cooperated with one author, Adam Clymer, for a biography that came out in 1999.

H1B Transfer is not equal to H1B Renewal.
H1B transfer: when you change your job, you transfer your H1B visa to the new employer.
H1B Renewal: when you stay in the same company for 3 years, you need to file h1B renewal for the 2nd duration of 3 years.

    Folks,
I hope someone can help me out here. Here's my situation -- I am EB2 with PD of May 24th 2006 (current date is May 8th 2006).

I applied for my I-485 September 2008 and have had EAD for more than a year now. However, I got married in Feb 2009 (after my 485 application) and never had a chance to add my wife to the application (she's on H4).

Now, I really really want to change my job (not change of role/title, just change of company).

How does it work if I change companies now? I don't want to or rather can't use EAD since that will make my wife's status invalid. Now, if I am to get a H1B transfer, what happens with my GC application given I already have my EAD with the current company??

    Please advise. Thank you!

If your H1B approved as a part of change of status from L1, Your current status will be H1B (You can check that on new I94) from the date H1B starts. In this case, You lost your L1 status and you need to start working with H1B employer. You need to take advice from your H1B Lawyer.

The Speaker In Charge (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/31/AR2007073101628.html?hpid=opinionsbox1) By Harold Meyerson (meyersonh@washpost.com), August 1, 2007

This is one of those odd weeks when Congress may actually work. Both houses are likely to pass Democratic bills to expand SCHIP, the children's health coverage program. Yesterday, the House enacted lobbying reform, and the Senate may follow suit tomorrow. Also yesterday, the House passed a bill restoring the right of victims of pay discrimination to sue their employers.

In short, it's one of those weeks when Nancy Pelosi has no doubts about the wisdom of her decision to become speaker of the House.

"What's it like?" she asked herself, beaming, at the conclusion of a breakfast meeting with roughly 20 liberal journalists yesterday morning.

    "It's fabulous! Absolutely fabulous!"

It can't always be thus. Her biggest frustration, of course, is Congress's inability to end the war in Iraq, which she terms "a huge moral catastrophe for the country." It is the public's biggest frustration as well, she says, and the main reason that popular support for Congress has plummeted.

In September, Iraq will once again be Congress's chief item of business, when Gen. David Petraeus delivers his state-of-the-war report.

Pelosi (understandably, given the administration's mountain of misrepresentation on all war-related matters) is wary. "The plural of anecdote is not data," she said. "I'm very concerned they'll pass off anecdotal successes as progress in Iraq."

The question in September will be whether congressional Republicans continue to support President Bush's open-ended commitment to keeping U.S. forces in Iraq while a civil war rages around them. To date, the Republicans' strategy, and not just on the war, has been to thwart the Democrats at every turn and to use the Senate's 60-vote supermajority requirement both to create a "do-nothing" Congress against which they can run and to spare their president from having to veto popular legislation. (Why they care about sparing Bush -- he will never face voters again; they will -- plunges us into the murk of abnormal psychology.)

The GOP strategy is not without its pitfalls. Republicans have succeeded in tanking Congress's approval ratings, but polls consistently show the public, most importantly in swing districts, preferring Democrats to Republicans. With this week's vote on expanding SCHIP, though, Democrats are convinced that the price of blocking health care for uninsured children is more than many Republicans are willing to pay. Bush has vowed to veto the legislation; Pelosi, noting with an almost incredulous glee that the administration will stand athwart children's health care on the grounds of opposing a higher tobacco tax, says, simply, "Welcome to this discussion."

Not all discussions, even in a good week, are so pleasurable to anticipate. Asked about the resolution that her congressional colleague Jay Inslee of Washington has introduced to impeach Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Pelosi put her hands to her temples as if to ward off a headache. For the past year, Pelosi has made clear to her colleagues and the public alike that she has no interest in pursuing the impeachment option, though Gonzales is certainly doing his damnedest to change her mind. She remains unpersuaded, believing that impeachment would fail and in the process would make weeks such as this one -- a week in which the public's business is at last getting done -- far more uncommon than they already are.

Pelosi understands the gravity of the damage that the administration has done to the Constitution and why that has impelled some of her colleagues to advocate impeachment. "If I were not the speaker and I were not in Congress," she said, very quietly, as she concluded her answer, "I would probably be advocating for impeachment." But the consequences she foresees from stopping the nation's business for an unwinnable fight outweighs those considerations.

Pelosi deserves considerable credit for holding her party together on a range of divisive issues, but she plainly views the coming fight among House Democrats on fuel efficiency standards as irrepressible.

The energy bill the House will pass this week contains no provisions that would raise those standards; such provisions, if any, await the outcome of a battle between Pelosi and Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell, the Democrat who has represented Detroit and the auto industry in Congress since 1955 (that is, before tailfins).

"I respect all our chairmen," Pelosi said. But the legislation, she continued, isn't about them. "It's about our children's ability to breathe clean air. Nothing less than the planet is at stake. I love him [Dingell] dearly, but we have to prevail. . . . The forces at work here [against stricter standards] are rich and entrenched," she concluded, "and it takes just a few [votes] to prevent us from unleashing the future."

Thus, the most elegant of happy warriors, in a week when it's fun to be speaker.

Lott Looking to Form New Gang (http://rollcall.com/issues/53_38/news/20338-1.html) By Erin P. Billings | Roll Call Staff, October 4, 2007

In what could be a new incarnation of the successful bipartisan Gang of 14, Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.) hosted a meeting this week with a handful of the Senates most notable compromisers to figure out how to unclog the gridlock that has slowed the chambers progress this year.

About half a dozen moderate and independent-minded Republicans and at least one Democrat Sen. Ben Nelson (Neb.) participated in the Members-only huddle, which was held quietly in Lotts Capitol office Tuesday morning. Afterward, few Senators offered much detail, but several said theres a feeling among them that the narrowly divided chamber no longer can operate at an impasse and they want to find ways to avoid the growing number of filibusters sidelining Senate legislation this year.

Were seeing if theres a way to bring some people together to bring some more comity to this place, Nelson said.

Lott declined to discuss the meeting or its goals, saying only: I think I ought not say anything. Others are going to say too much, so I am not going to say anything.

According to other Senators, however, the discussion focused on how the deal-minded group could help avert the growing number of standoffs in trying to clear bills through the Senate this Congress. Most particularly, Senators said they vetted ways to work through upcoming fights on such issues as appropriations bills and stalled judicial nominations such as that of Leslie Southwick, Lotts home-state pick for the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Southwick narrowly cleared the Judiciary Committee last summer but has yet to come up for full Senate consideration. The White House and Republican Senators have been trying to corral 60 votes to advance his confirmation, but are still shy of meeting that mark against powerful Democratic opposition.

Its about creating a better environment to get things done for the country, said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who participated in the meeting. We need to get back to being a deliberative body.

Were going to see if we can work beyond the logjam, said Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), who also was there and described it as the beginning of a process.

Graham, Nelson and Snowe were members of the previous Congress bipartisan Gang of 14, a group of seven Democrats and seven Republicans who assembled in the face of a bitter partisan Senate standoff over movement of President Bushs judicial nominees. The group brokered a historic deal to allow for votes on certain stalled Bush picks in exchange for keeping the minoritys option to use the filibuster intact.

That group didnt formally involve Lott as one of its members, but the then-rank-and-file Mississippi Senator was a primary force behind the scenes leading to its creation. Lott stepped away after the gang officially formed.

Nelson wouldnt say this week whether Tuesdays meeting was a step toward

re-creating a similar bipartisan coalition, calling the Gang of 14 unique. But the Nebraska Democrat did suggest there are clear parallels in terms of the two groups goals.

Its just a conversation at this point, Nelson said. Were trying to see if theres an interest in building support for moving legislation and to avoid having as many cloture votes as weve had and moving legislation along.

So far this year, the Democratic majority has called to invoke cloture, a lengthy procedural roadblock that has markedly slowed down Senate action on a whole host of bills, some 56 times. Democrats have argued they are forced to do so against an intransigent 49-seat GOP minority, while Republicans have insisted it shows that Democrats are trying to ram through legislation without their input.

Although not all showed up, sources indicated that about 10 Senators were asked to take part in Tuesdays meeting. In addition to Lott, Nelson, Graham and Snowe, GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Bob Corker (Tenn.), John Warner (Va.), John McCain (Ariz.), Gordon Smith (Ore.) and Norm Coleman (Minn.) were invitees.

Although not in attendance Tuesday, Coleman said discussions abound among rank-and-file Senators about how to fix things and break some of the legislative stalemate. He added that its not a surprise that Lott one of the Senates most notorious deal-makers would lead the charge.

Its a legitimate concern, Coleman said of the gridlock. Were all impacted by the failure of being able to do the things that people sent us here to do.

My daughter has joined in a medical program in India and she has to return to US after 4 years to continue her studies. Her 485 is in process and she has stamped H4 upto 2012 ( 3 years from now). I am trying to find out the best strategy to get her here after 4 years if we dont get GC prior to H4 stamping expiry.
Should I continue to apply her EAD and Advance parole whenever she visits US (She will come to US atleast once every year)? Or Can I apply for her EAD and Parole just before the expiry of her h4 stamp (That is after 3 years)? Please advise.

    July 2nd - Wife and I applied for 485\EAD\AP

    The lawyer sent a single check(I know !!! I know !!!)
    Our applications got separated.

Mine came back on Aug 30th and my wifes last week
    We have now refiled
This time it has gone for "special handling"-bypassing the mail room

I haven't got the receipt yet

Anyone who had a similar experience or went via special handling for some other reason...
How long does it take to get the receipt nowadays ?
(I couldn't see any receipt update on USCIS- I guess most of the people are past that stage)

Will special-handling speed up my Receipt OR EAD OR AP?
