I agree. The Intel 3000 isn't as bad as people make it out to be. If you want to play games, don't bother with an Air.

I think to dictate what people should or shouldn't do with their machines is silly. Search the forums and the internet. The Air has proven to be plenty capable as a gaming machine for it's size and has many satisfied users talking about it.

A computer is a tool. If it can't perform the function that you want it to (aka gaming), then why buy it? It's function over form. Not the other way around.

A computer is certainly a tool, but it can also be a gaming machine, a home theater pc, an entertainment hub, etc.; whatever a user may find use for it for.

Obviously, certain machines are better and worse at certain functions than others, but don't forget that this generation of MBA, there are people that actually did go out and buy the Air because one of the reasons is that it did happen to be a decent performer in games, while remaining ultra portable. In this case, I think the Air strikes an excellent balance between function and form.

IAs for the backlit keyboard, it's both function and form but I usually don't rely on it to type something unless I'm hunting for a key that I don't use very often. No, I don't memorize where the keys are, I just have been typing on a keyboard for many years and now where the keys are because that's how I learned to type.

I use my Air for live music sets and this is exactly a scenario where such a BL KB would be grand. I read similar opinions from other musicians on this forum in another thread. Creative artists like live musicians can definitely find appropriate use for a backlit kb, but even average everyday users who don't share the same skill level as you would also benefit from it. If anything, adding convenience is always a welcome.

If you don't want or need the backlit kb, then you could always turn it off. It's there for people who might need it. Win-win situation.

it wasn't until iOS and the apps store where you could do things like select a few recipes and make a shopping list did a PDA become useful

Recipe and shopping list Palm / Windows Mobile apps like Pocket Cook date from 2000. That one in particular won awards for years.

What you mean is, it wasn't until iOS that the mass public else took notice. Millions of us were surfing the web and using apps on PDAs, smartphones and tablets long before that.

You're pretty close to nailing it there - in truth, they're still sheep and zealots, terms that imply a lack of ability to think for oneself and an over-the-top reaction when someone else makes up, or changes, their mind for them. It's the same morons, they just rush to extremes no matter what.

    Woah, woah, woah.

First of all, the "cease and desist" letter wasn't posted here until the second page of the thread, hence all we had to go on was the other sites' reports. (And even I missed that one post until just now).

And even having read that letter, I'm still opposed to Apple's moves and intentions here. They're still trying to trademark the word "Pod", which I think is utterly farcical.

Never mind the delicious irony in Apple objecting to the phonetic similarity between iPod and MyPodder, when iPod was obviously chosen to leverage the phonetic similarity with a familiar word ("tripod") - could MyPodder not argue they were doing likewise? Never mind the fact that the Apple name was 'borrowed' from another company, and was the name of one of its products ("Classic") was taken verbatim from another company.

So, how do you define "racism in practice"?

Is taking the seat next to a white over an asian racist?

How about going to a black cashier instead of a white one?

Hah. I like this question because it's hard. I fear my idealism can't stand up to it...

In principle I believe that nobody should act differently towards another because of their race. That would be racist discrimination, in theory. It would be racist to choose to sit next to an asian person instead of a white person (irrespective of your motives: either as a white-hater or as a rice-chaser).

But this would be impossible to criminalise. It would be highly impractical and frankly, whilst I disapprove of such actions, I cannot imagine a legal framework effectively punishing them. It would be utterly totalitarian.

But at the other extreme, I'm sure we all agree it is entirely unacceptable to deny somebody a job, say, because of their ethnicity. This would be ultimately harming them for it; and when we harm others by practising our opinions against them, we breach a fundamental tenet of Western society.

The difficulty, as always, comes in deciding on the threshold of what we tolerate, as a society. To answer that question I suppose we need to ask a few others. What constitutes harm to another? How practically can we judge when harm has been done? How easily can we punish offenders?

I don't suppose that's really an answer. Sorry.

I don't like the idea of living in a world where good outcomes are enforced.

My wife's car was hit in her work's parking garage not too long ago... and the woman who hit her put a note on the car. I felt really good about this, considering how many times I've been hit-and-run in the past. Until I noticed the big security camera pointed right at the space.

I didn't feel good anymore. I don't know if the woman left the note because she's a good person who did the right thing, or if she did it because she thought she might have been caught on camera.

I want to see racist people being racist and good people not being racist. I want to know where the line is. I don't want an overbearing nanny government forcing everyone to play nice.

I entirely agree that genuine kindness and tolerance is far superior to its artificial counterpart. When something is fake, it's about as rewarding as making the bully apologise by everyone ganging up on him and twisting his arm. It may seem nice but its insincerity undermines its value. I guess you'd like Kant, whose categorical imperative roughly says that the moral worth of an action lies in its intent.

But whilst utopia would be kind people acting with tolerance out of the goodness of their hearts, we don't really see this. In fact, people often harm others. This isn't great. Neither is it great to force people into acting in the interests of other people. But frankly I believe it is better to protect the vulnerable from harm than to allow the abusers their freedom. Even if that means a 'nanny state'. I'm not saying we should decapitate one who insults another. I merely believe in the principle of enforcing people not to harm others by their actions. Neither with intent nor carelessness.

That's my idealism. Don't ask me to qualify 'harm' or propose appropriate laws against it because that would be tough...

I'd go with the Shinza one, as it is better looking and seems like it would absorb shock better. Ten bucks extra seems to be a reasonable price to pay.

I bought the foof bag (http://www.foofbag.com/), as I usually put my PowerBook inside of my backpack and I wanted something to protect it from scratches, etc. But it is a bit girly, and takes longer to get to you since it is handmade.

All I use it for is Syncing between multiple Macs - which is handy but hardly a justification for the $99 price of admission.

That ALONE makes it worth $99 per year. Then I get IMAP email...then I get iDisk...and everything else. There is room for improvement, but I love the .Mac service.

I can personally attest to being somebody who just switched to a mac. I've always wanted to own a Mac but didn't want to chance abandoning Windows completely. I'm a gamer and there's a few other apps that just don't exist for Apple that I use. Now I've got a Mac Pro dual booting OSX and XP Pro 64-bit.

It's much easier to justify the switch when you know you can always switch back if you just don't like it.

    I give up.
    I know the feeling. :D
I tried to put the Obama/Hu/Ballmer January meeting in perspective since this story first appeared. (Links and all…) But heh, fanboys and galls will believe what they want to believe.
    :o

    Anyway:
    I'll try again:
Steve Ballmer was in France on the day the dinner party was held, there to receive (http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/corporate/obama_toasts_tech_heavyweights_ballmer_not_present.html) the Legion D’Honneur from President Nicolas Sarkozy. And it’s pretty hard to be in two places at once, especially when they’re a few thousand miles apart.
Admittedly Ballmer's French is dire, still he tried.
    Linky (http://www.01net.com/editorial/528445/steve-ballmer-%28microsoft%29-promu-chevalier-de-la-legion-dhonneur/?r=/rss/actus.xml)… and here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYKjFfkqBmo)…

    Edit:
And… cue the usual "Cheese-eating surrender monkeys" posts

Actually, it is the taste of Kanto (around Tokyo) not that of Kansai (around Osaka). But for the image of Apple in Japan, Kansai plot is not suitable, I guess. Because the image of Kansai is not cool.

As a native Japanese, good one is iLife one (someone calls it "iRife" BTW).

Actors are comedian duo called "Ramens" (you know ramen as in chinese noodle)

Eh Kansai not cool? No way...Shock!

Kind of unique that instead of using regular actors they are using a manzai group. Way to go manzai boom. Cultrually unique.

    The Rahmens (http://www.twinkle-co.co.jp/profile/rahmens.html)
    More about the Rahmens (http://tvinjapan.blogspot.com/2006/05/japanese-tradition-more-fr_114654121352258176.html)

Why? Oh Why use Kanto Manzai.... damn manzai boom. Drives me nuts. Much of it is painful. I would prefer wearing braces to watching kanto humor. Kanto humor is drier than a desert.

I know Steve has some kind of plane to take on the Pentium world hes a smart guy especially if he got this far.

I have 2 Pc's yes still no mac....

    Comp 1: P3 700Mhz w/ 256mgs, Geforce 2

    Comp 2: p4 2.4 Ghz w/ 512mgs, Geforce 3

Let me tell you I was so excited about the "new Pentium 4 Processor" when it came out. To tell you the truth there is not a whole lot difference between Pentium 3 700Mhz, and Pentium 4 2.4Ghz. I was actually dispointed because everybody made such a big deal about it. The Mhz numbers looked nice on p4 but I waisted my money!

I've read the various comments about problems with the updates with RAID 0. Can anyone confirm if the update goes ok on RAID 1? I would think it would since from a boot point of view they might as well be individual disks.

Any comments before I try this?

Well I managed to pickup Leopard & a tshirt from Regent st. It was pretty mad in there. I took some shots with my Nikon + sigma 30mm f1.4 but I've yet to process them.

It was fun waiting around if only to see the hordes of people and interest in what is... a software update.
